Grifola frondosa (also known as maitake, hen-of-the-woods, ram's head or sheep's head mushroom) is a mushroom and adaptogen typically found on tree stumps and roots in summer and autumn months across Asia, Europe and North America. Translated as "dancing mushroom" in Japanese, maitake is thought to have earned its name because people who found it in the wild danced with joy upon finding this powerful agent. Maitakes are rich in antioxidants, beta-glucans, vitamins B and C, copper, potassium, fiber, aminos and minerals. Maitake has been used for centuries in China and Japan, often taken because it is thought to boost mood, brain health and immunity.
