S-Adenosyl Methionine ("SAMe") is a compound found naturally in the body that helps produce and regulate hormones and maintain cell membranes. It is involved in the formation, activation and breakdown of chemicals in the body, including hormones, proteins and certain drugs. SAMe has been available in the US as a dietary supplement since 1999, but it has been taken as a prescription drug in Germany, Italy and Spain for decades. Some body states appear to be associated with lower circulating levels of SAMe, including depression, where SAMe has demonstrated strong therapeutic potential.*
